A rough-looking man named Earl buys beer, cigarettes and lottery tickets at a convenience store at 10:00 in the morning, then steals some CDs and an American flag from another car in the parking lot. As Earl lights a cigarette, he flashes back through a quick overview of his life: meeting and marrying his wife, Joy, during a drunken binge...discovering the next morning that she was six months pregnant...naming the baby Dodge and later having another son, Earl, Jr., who is half African-American (and thus obviously not Earl's biological son)... spending his days with Joy and his brother Randy at Ernie's Crab Shack, where their friend, Darnell works...and playing "beer can tag" with another friend named Sonny. Finally, back in the parking lot, Earl scratches his lottery tickets and realizes he's just won $100,000. Bursting with joy, he runs into the street...where he's immediately hit by a car, and his winning ticket blows away in the breeze. A few days later, as Earl lays still woozy in the hospital, Joy brings him some papers to sign and says she's considering marrying Darnell. Earl reminds Joy she's already married - to him - but it turns out the papers he just signed granted their divorce. Later, Earl sees Carson Daly on TV, saying he always tries to do good things because karma will send bad deeds back and haunt you. Earl realizes this is true, and a few days later, when he gets out of the hospital, he moves into a motel room with Randy. While Randy seduces the maid, Tatiana, Earl makes a list of "every bad thing I've ever done," then shows it to Randy, saying the lottery ticket episode showed him that if he doesn't start doing good things with his life, karma's going to kill him. While Earl picks up litter in the motel parking lot (to make up for his litterbug past), Randy reads the list. When Randy gets to number 64, picking on a boy named Kenny James in grade school, Earl says he can't cross Kenny off the list until he does something nice for him. And as soon as he says this, he finds his lost lottery ticket on the ground nearby...convinces him the karmic plan is already working.
A few days later, after cashing the lottery check, Earl, Randy and Tatiana drive to Kenny's parents' house. Earl primes Randy with four beers, then sends him to find out how to contact Kenny. Inside, however, Kenny's parents serve Randy even more beer. Meanwhile, in the car, Tatiana tells Earl she's trying to improve her life, too, by going to college at night. Then she tries kissing Earl. But he pulls away, noting Randy called "dibs" on Tatiana. Just then, police cars pull up, and we see the cops chase Randy (who just drank nine more beers and called "dibs" on Kenny's mother) out of the house.
That night, Earl, Randy and Tatiana sit outside Kenny's house and watch him eat takeout food alone inside. Earl continues to spy on Kenny, at work and at home, over the next few days and finally decides what Kenny needs is companionship. So he decides to bring a prostitute named Patty to Kenny's house. As Earl waits outside, Patty gains entry by pretending to be a Greenpeace volunteer. But a while later, Patty comes back out and tells Earl she just wasn't able to seduce Kenny. So Earl and Randy go to Kenny's door. When Kenny answers, he recognizes Earl immediately and runs back inside. But Earl insists he's here to help
by finding Kenny a woman. As Earl talks, however, Randy pokes around and finds a gay porn magazine, which explains why Kenny wasn't interested in Patty. But when Randy breaks the news to Earl, who has "never known a gay before," Earl freaks out and flees the house.
Back at the hotel, Earl crosses Kenny off his list, claiming "special circumstances." But then Joy arrives, holding a newspaper story about Earl's lottery winnings and demanding half the money. When Earl refuses, Joy throws a telephone at him and storms out and Earl decides her visit was karma slapping him back for ducking out on Kenny. So Earl returns to Kenny's house and asks why he doesn't have a boyfriend. At first, Kenny's still scared, but Earl explains his need to make amends to improve his karma, and Kenny explains he just hasn't been able to tell anyone in this small town that he's gay. Earl suggests he visit a gay bar in a nearby city, but Kenny says he tried but didn't have the courage to go in.
So Earl offers to go with him, and a bit later, he, Kenny and Randy arrive at a gay bar. A bit later, inside, Earl spots a guy he thinks would be good for Kenny, and offers to go talk to him. But Kenny declines, saying he should do it himself. Earl reminds Kenny that he still needs to do a good deed for him, but Kenny says Earl already has -- by being the first person to ever accept Kenny for who he is and giving him the confidence to be himself. So Kenny walks off, happy now, and Earl crosses him off the list...while Randy, unable to resist the old school music, prances out to the dance floor, summoning one of the gay patrons to join him.
