ABOUT STUDENT NEWS

Student NewsFox 61 Student News, FSN, is a nationally recognized student-centered program designed to give students real-world experiences in broadcast journalism and production. The program is part of WTIC's long term commitment to promote excellence in education for all children and youth and is free of charge to Connecticut Middle and High Schools.

FSN is an in-depth comprehensive program that is directly involved with schools. Student teams consisting of reporter, producer, editors and videographers produce 50 second news reports. These reports feature stories and events that are of interest to children or have an impact on them. The best of these reports are selected for broadcast on Fox 61.
STUDENT NEWS UPDATES

We are restructuring the program and have put in place new dates to help us streamline story evaluations and broadcast. Please use these dates when anticipating feedback. We have not been able to keep up with evaluations at an ongoing basis so we will be doing set evaluation dates, posting dates, and ready for air dates. Once a story is ready for air keep an eye on the schedule to see when it will actually be on.

FOX 61 CATEGORIES

We are phasing out sponsored categories as we and trying to keep with our news format. We are in the process of confirming scholarship donations and will update with specific prize money. These are the areas for submission.

Arts & Entertainment - all things arts and entertainment, travel, leisure, music, etc.

Hartford Wolfpack Community FoundationSports - $2000 First Place High School, $1000 First Place Middle School

The Wolf Pack Community Foundation Award is given to the best sports story. The goal of this award is to encourage students to focus their report on the topic of sports and/ or sportsmanship. Possible topics could include but are not limited to amateur and professional sports, individual and team sports, athletes giving back to the community, exceptional sportsmanship, and leaders in local sports.

Environmental - all things about going green and news regarding the environment.

Making a difference in the community - individuals or groups.

Current Affairs - social, economic, political, cultural etc.

Human Rights - $500 First Place - High School

The Connecticut Commission on Human Rights Award is given to the high school students who produce the best news story addressing human rights issues. News is information that is of interest. Human rights news involves information that concerns each individual's right to be treated fairly, despite his or her race, ethnicity, gender, physical capabilities or sexual orientation.

The concepts of justice, equality and freedom from oppression are phrases heard so often they can lose their vitality. The goal of this award is to have high school students explore behavior that will move us closer to making these “concepts" a living reality.

The winner of this award may expose what is unfair. Or, they may awaken the viewer to the plight and perseverance of a person facing adversity, affirming that person’s humanity. Ultimately, you will produce a news story that puts the viewer inside the skin of your subject.


Best Overall - The Fox 61 & WTXX Outstanding Achievement Award is given to the best news stories in each division. Judging is based on story delivery by the reporter, quality of interviews, originality of story, quality of writing, quality of photography, audio quality, editing quality and overall presentation.



SUBMISSION INFORMATION


Please submit your stories on DVD if you school has the capability. This insures the best on-air quality.

DVDs can have multiple stories as long as there is a menu to select from

:50 seconds still rules as the time for each Student News story.

***Remember to lay down color bars and tones at the beginning of your reel. This will enable our post-production team to achieve the highest level of professional quality when dubbing the stories for broadcast air.***
